The sun is the principal source of energy.

For this lesson we are going to show the sun being a source of energy for growing plants.

Students will observe 3 different areas growing the same plant. The type of plant can be of your choosing, for this example we will go with a pumpkin.

Growth area 1: Dig out a “cave” where there is no light. Plant 4 pumpkins and let grow for at least 2 Minecraft days (approx. 40 mins.)

Growth area 2: Dig out a cave and leave one beam of light coming from the top of the cave. Plant 4 pumpkins in the same way and let grow for at least 2 Minecraft days (approx. 40 mins).

Growth area 3: Plant 4 pumpkins outside with full access to the sunlight. Let grown for at least 2 Minecraft days (approx. 40 mins.)

After the growing time, students can compare the 3 growing areas. How many pumpkins grew in each area? Which area seems to be better for pumpkin growing? What changed between the 3 areas? What do we think influenced the different growth?
